How Burglars Exploit the Weak Points in Your Home

No matter what you might have done to increase the security of your home, it is critical to evaluate the weakest safety points in your home to understand how to make them stronger.  There are always going to be areas of your home that are more vulnerable to attack, and it is these areas on which you should concentrate.
Contrary to what most people believe, burglars are very smart professionals.  They analyze a home completely in terms of its strengths and weaknesses, and then they exploit those weaknesses.  Many burglars spend hours and days investigating a property; they make a complete blueprint of their burglary plan based upon the weak areas of your home.

Where are the possible weak points in a home?

  • Door latching systems:  The first security loophole a burglar observes in a home is the door latching system. This is how your doors close and lock. Burglars do not normally fully understand this system without knowing how the door latches from the inside. In such cases, the burglars may pretend to be pizza delivery boys or electricians claiming to fix a wiring in your home. Once they are in your home, they study the latching system of your doors.
  • Open windows: Burglars also study the windows with great detail.  In case the door latching system proves a tough nut to crack for the burglars, they use the windows.  Most people keep their windows open while they are sleeping to encourage cool, environmental air.  This works tremendously to the advantage of the burglars, as they gain an easy entry to the home through the windows.  The only way they are thwarted from this access is if the window line has a burglar alarm system installed.
  • Closed windows: When windows are shut, burglars use acid solutions to melt down the glass window. They have the option of breaking the window, but they do not prefer to create noises, especially when the neighborhood is quiet at night.
  • Basement windows: This is the weakest point that can be captured by the burglars. Situated on the ground floor of an individual’s apartment, basement windows are easiest for burglars to break open.
  • Chimneys: Many stand alone row homes have chimneys to expel the smoke from the kitchen.  Burglars assume that individuals do not cook late at night, and they try to enter the home through the chimney.  This is an extremely risky method because if a family member decides to make a hot cup of milk for him on the furnace, the burglar could go up in flames. However, burglary statistics show that in close to 40% of the cases, burglars try to enter the home through the chimneys.

Motion Sensors – An effective counter to burglary

One of the best devices to counter burglary is motion sensors. Motion sensors work on the simple principle of photosensitivity, where a beam of light runs across the room from the door. When any individual treads through this beam, the circuit is broken, setting off the alarm and turning on a light at the designated control area.

Burglars are intelligent professionals who strategize on the many options to enter the home.  Motion sensors secure each of the entry points to prevent burglar intrusion, as well as stop any incoming burglar in his tracks.  It is a worthy investment that will protect your family and valuables.
